Playing with poise under pressure, West Negros University of Bacolod nipped University of Iloilo, 84-82, yesterday in the finals of the Visayas regional championship of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League in Dumaguete City.
The win capped a stirring tournament for the Mustangs, who also overcame Western Leyte College, 75-67, on their way to clinching a place in the Sweet 16.
The other teams that saw action in the tournament were AMA Computer Learning Center, last year’s winner, Bohol’s BIT International College and Negros Oriental’s Asian College of Science and Technology.
The Mindanao regional games also got going Tuesday with STI College of Cagayan de Oro defending its title against Saint Joseph College of Sindangan, Zamboanga, Holy Trinity College of Gen. Santos and Holy Cross College of Davao.
The winner will represent Mindanao in the Round 16, where UAAP champion Ateneo, along with UAAP’s top teams University of Santo Tomas, National University and La Salle and NCAA teams San Beda, San Sebastian, Letran and Perpetual Help are already seeded.
CESAFI champion Southwestern University, University of Visayas, and University of San Jose Recoletos are also in the elite group.
