UST softbelles halt PUP in intercollage softball championships

University of Santo Tomas overpowered Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 7-3, yesterday to stay in contention for a semifinal berth in the Cebuana Lhuillier National Intercollegiate Women’s Softball Championship at Rosario Sports Complex in Pasig City.

The win lifted the Tigresses to 3-1 for a tie with their victims at the top and muddled up the semifinals race in Group B of the 12-team tournament.

National U also stayed in the hunt with a 12-1 drubbing of Ateneo in six innings that saw the Lady Bulldogs improve to 2-1, while University of the East gained an outside chance after winning two of their first four games.

But the Lady Warriors have an uphill climb ahead, needing to win over Central Luzon State U and pray that PUP and UST lose their remaining games.

The Lady Bulldogs can move into the semifinals if they sweep their remaining matches against CLSU and PUP.

In Group A, Rizal Technological U made the last four after shutting out St. Louis University of Baguio, 10-0.

RTU joined defending champion Adamson in the knockout round.

CLSU (1-2) finally barged into the win column with a five-inning 11-4 rout of Ateneo (0-4). Cedelf P. Tupas
