MANILA, Philippines—Phoenix drew contributions across the board to snap a two-game skid with a 125-108 win over Blackwater in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday at Ynares Sports Center.
James Dickey III spearheaded Phoenix with another monster double-double of 27 points and 26 rebounds, while Ken Tuffin and the rest of the Fuel Masters stepped up to halt their slide.
“We treated this like a playoff game, we wanted to come out strong and we were able to do that today. The coaches had great game plans and we were able to execute them,” Tuffin said after scoring 20 points with seven rebounds and three assists.
“It feels good to be back on the winning side of things.”
Phoenix improved to 4-3, good for fifth place in the conference.
Coach Charles Tiu’s wards broke the game wide open with 29 assists, compared to just 16 by Blackwater.
Jason Perkins also made his presence felt with 25 points, the highest among Phoenix locals. Tyler Tio scored 14 points with five assists while Ricci Rivero turned in a silent 13-point performance
Pat Aquino remained winless as Blackwater interim coach following the team’s coaching change.
Blackwater fell to 1-6 despite Robert Upshaw’s 36 points and nine rebounds. Sedrick Barefield and Paul Zamar added 27 and 14 points, respectively, in the loss.
Phoenix looks to regain the momentum it once had at the start of the conference when it takes on undefeated Rain or Shine (7-0) on Tuesday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
