NCAA wants Alas apology in writing

THE NCAA management committee has threatened to slap Letran coach Louie Alas and NCAA basketball technical committee head Romy Guevarra with a one-game suspension each if they fail to submit a written apology to the league before Game 3 on Friday.

Alas has publicly apologized for the slit-throat gesture he made in front of members of the basketball technical committee in the final seconds of Game 2, which the Knights won, 64-55. The gesture did not sit well with Guevarra, who charged at Alas before cooler heads intervened.

The decision, which upheld the recommendation of tournament commissioner Joe Lipa, was announced yesterday after long hours of deliberations Monday, where NCAA Mancom chair Fr. Vic Calvo of Letran and Jose Mari Lacson inhibited themselves.

“The NCAA management committee has asked for a written apology letter from NCAA technical committee head Romy Guevara and Letran coach Louie Alas to be submitted as soon as possible,” said NCAA Mancom vice chair Dax Castellano of La Salle Green Hills.

“Failure to do so by both will merit one-game suspension.”

Alas, speaking to reporters Monday night, apologized for his actions, saying he was only looking after the welfare of his team.

“I’m very sorry about it,” said Alas. “It was in the heat of the moment. I didn’t disrespect anybody I’m just doing my job. I’m always looking out for the welfare of my team.”
