For Nonito Donaire Jr., two weeks would be enough for promoter Bob Arum to seal his showdown with Mexican star Jorge Arce on Dec. 15.
Wherever it may be, Donaire doesn’t mind one bit—even if it means fighting in Arce’s territory, Mexico. Otherwise, he’ll just take the rest of the year off.
“If they don’t give us (Arce camp) a definite answer in two weeks, I will go the route of resting,” said Donaire at the PSA Forum yesterday at Shakey’s Malate. “I’m willing to fight in Mexico even if I’m at a disadvantage.”
The reigning WBO super bantamweight champion is coming off a masterful performance, scoring a ninth-round stoppage of Japan’s Toshiaki Nishioka two weeks ago in Carson City, California.
Top Rank promoter Arum is reportedly set to announce the Donaire-Arce fight, which could be the Filipino’s first pay-per-view card. Donaire, however, was quick to quash the talk, saying nothing is concrete because Arce is asking for too much.
“It’s being talked about. I’m excited for it. But for now if it doesn’t happen, I’m going to rest,” said Donaire, who suffered a deep cut on his left knuckle during the Nishioka fight.
Donaire said the fight is no longer his decision because “I already have a minimum fee.”
“But they (Arce camp) want more. For them I’m the biggest money out there,” he said.
Among the big names in Donaire’s division are Abner Mares, Guillermo Rigondaeux and Anselmo Moreno.
