MANILA — The entry of San Miguel Beer will raise the level of competition in the Asean Basketball League.
Mikee Romero, co-owner of the inaugural ABL champion Philippine Patriots, stressed this yesterday as he welcomed SMB and looked forward to a “friendly rivalry” with the Beermen, who have a winning tradition in the Philippine Basketball Association.
“Knowing the resources of San Miguel, I’m very sure it will also put up a very competitive team and we don’t want to be left behind,” said Romero, who acknowledged San Miguel head honcho Ramon S. Ang as a mentor and an idol.
“Being a No. 2 is not an option for us,” added Romero, who vowed to form a more formidable lineup for the coming season.
Romero said San Miguel’s entry is a positive sign for the league, which will open its third season late this year.
On the court, though, the pleasantries are expected to be set aside.
“Mr. Ang is one person I look up to, but when our players play against each other, only the strong will survive,” said Romero.
“But I just want to stress that it’s going to be a friendly rivalry,” he added.
The Harbour Centre franchise which Romero owns had set a record of seven straight titles in the PBL.
“Harbour Centre and San Miguel have a rich tradition not only in basketball and I’m sure Filipino fans in the region will come and support the two Philippine teams,” Romero said.
