MANILA, Philippines–Gilas Pilipinas wrapped up the first round of the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers on a rough note after being handed a 92-49 loss by host Australia on Monday in Perth.

Playing minus an injured Justin Brownlee, Gilas saw itself trailing behind after an 8-all tie at the start and was left to play catch-up the rest of the way against a Boomers side at RAC Arena.

The Philippines ended the initial phase of the qualification for next year’s World Cup with a 2-4 record for third in Group A. Australia topped the group by winning all six games while New Zealand is in second at 4-2.

Gilas Pilipinas will try to close out its third window assignment in the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asia-Oceania Qualifiers with a win against heavily favored Australia at the RAC Arena on Monday in Perth.

The Filipinos try to put behind the painful effects of a 106-102 double-overtime loss to New Zealand last week behind and refocus against the hefty and talented Boomers, the sixth-ranked nation in the world that is undefeated in five matches thus far.

Gilas has a 2-3 record after that loss to the Tall Blacks, and though the Filipinos are assured of advancing to the next round, an upset win would come in handy as they would have some kind of buffer heading into the next window against formidable Middle Eastern nations.

Gilas Pilipinas was dealt a big blow ahead of its crucial clash with Australia in the 2027 Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Monday.

Coming off a heartbreaking loss to New Zealand on Friday night, the Nationals will be without naturalized forward Justin Brownlee against the unbeaten Aussies, who lead Group A with a 5-0 mark.

“Brownlee will miss the game against Australia due to hamstring strain and peroneal tendinopathy on his right leg and left knee swelling and cartilage defects,” the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday night less than 24 hours before the Philippines’ duel against Australia at RAC Arena in Perth.
