MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala alleviated worries about her fitness after twisting her right ankle in a gutsy win over Caty McNally in the round of 32 of the Canadian Open in Toronto on Saturday.
Eala tweaked her right ankle midway through the second set and fought through it en route to a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over McNally to reach the fourth round of the WTA 1000 hard court event.
“I kind of rolled my ankle in that second set. Like, I hit the forehand and I landed kind of wrong. I called the physio. I don’t know what happened, because it happened so fast. But luckily there’s nothing wrong with it, and it was no serious problems,” the 25th seed Eala said in the post-match presser.

MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala endured a right foot injury to withstand a gritty Caty McNally, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and advance to the Canadian Open round of 16 on Saturday (Manila time) before a packed and raucous center court in Toronto.
Eala struggled after hurting her right foot midway through the second set as McNally forced a decider. But the Filipino star fought through the pain, unleashing a 2-0 start in the third,
The World No. 70 McNally, who upset Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, stayed within striking distance of Eala even after she reached match point with a strong ninth game.
But Eala seized a 30-0 lead before McNally halted her run, then the American misfired her last two attacks that led to another emotional win for the Filipino tennis ace after two hours and 39 minutes.
“I’m okay. I think I survived that one. It was so tough,” said Eala, who notched her seventh straight win dating back to her title run in the WTA 500 DC Open.
“I wanna thank Caty for a great match, being a great sport. It’s really one of those matches that really could have gone either way. I think it really down to details and a little bit of luck. So give her her flowers guys. It was really a great match.”

MANILA, Philippines —Alex Eala faces another American, Caty McNally, in the round of 32 of the 2026 Canadian Open in Toronto on Saturday.
Their match is scheduled for not earlier than 8 a.m. (Philippine time) at center court.
The No. 25 seed Eala will face McNally for the first time after the American stunned Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
The World No. 70 McNally also took down Tatjana Maria in the first round, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1.
The 24-year-old McNally reached a career-high ranking of No. 50 last June and has already won two WTA 125 titles, just like Eala. She has reached the second round of the Australian Open twice, the second round of the French Open this year and the second round of Wimbledon. Her best Grand Slam outing came at the 2020 US Open, where she reached the third round a year after making her debut.

They say the luck of the draw is a big thing. Sometimes, it boils down to everything.
Alex Eala hopes to take advantage of that, as she clashes with the player who ousted a major champion when the Filipino ace resumes her quest for a second straight WTA title Saturday morning in Manila.
The 21-year-old who has taken the tennis world by storm battles American Caty McNally in the third round of the Canadian Open, a WTA 100 event, at Sobey’s Stadium that fellow Filipinos packed to the rafters when she made her tournament debut on Thursday morning.
A 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over American Alycia Parks was wildly applauded and brought a whole new meaning to the words “homecourt advantage,” as Eala has packed stadiums anywhere she plays as a throng constantly wills her to win.

MANILA, Philippines —Tennis legend Venus Williams was all praise for doubles partner Alex Eala, whom she called a “world star,” after their latest pairing in Toronto.
Williams, a 14-time doubles Grand Slam champion, said she had sought out Eala as a partner and was impressed with her characteristics on and off the court.
“She’s just incredible. Besides the fact of her tennis, she’s an incredible person, well-spoken, and just an impressive young lady. So I like being around those kinds of things. I think we both lift each other up,” Williams said of Eala.
While their run lasted just one match this time after falling to Liudmila Samsonova and Miyu Kato, 6-4, 6-3, in the Canadian Open round of 32, Williams said she still enjoyed their time on the court.
