Land Rover targets better ‘Rainforest’ finish

MANILA—Team Land Rover Philippines looks to continue its impressive run in the international circuit when it vies in the Rainforest Challenge of Malaysia from Dec. 4 to 13 in Johor, Malaysia.

The squad, bannered by Sergio “Atoy” Jamilla and Hilario “Larry” Mendiola, finished eighth overall last year and claimed first runner-up honors in the 3,000cc division. The Filipinos were also adjudged as the most promising team.

“We’re preparing hard for the race and we hope to improve on our finish last year,” Jamilla said Thursday night during a dinner attended by Luis Wee, founder and creator of the Malaysia Rainforest Challenge.

The team also competed in the 2nd China Sanya International Off-Road Rainforest Challenge in August, the experience of which Jamilla acknowledged will come in handy in Malaysia.

The 10-day RFC in Malaysia has been hailed as the Formula One of off-road racing.

Wee is exploring the possibility of staging a first invitational rainforest challenge in the country.
