MANILA, Philippines – Big Chill remained unscathed after a hard-fought 68-59 win over winless Boracay Rum Monday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Superchargers fought off a third quarter funk as they banked on their defense down the stretch to nail their fourth consecutive win.
“We led by 13 but it was trimmed down. Luckily we were able to make stops. That’s why I tell them to always play defense, because defense can turn your bad luck around. If we miss, then we play defense,” said Big Chill head coach Robert Sison.
Big Chill looked well on its way to an easy win when it led 46-33 before Boracay Rum went on an 15-1 run to end the third period.
“(We didn’t play) consistent basketball on both ends, that’s what I’m telling them,” added Sison, who also cited that his team felt the effects of a 10-day layoff.
Mar Villahermosa nailed a much-needed basket for Big Chill to start the fourth quarter that somehow got his team out of the dry spell.
The Waves, who drowned to their fifth straight setback, failed to sustain their play as they went back to their sloppy ways.
The Superchargers went on a run of their own, scoring seven unanswered points to push their lead back to seven 62-55 with 3:42 left.
Terrence Romeo scored 22 points, including a triple that sealed Big Chill’s win 67-59 with only 1:18 remaining.
Romeo though went just six-of-18 from the field and only one-of-seven in the third quarter.
Roider Cabrera led Boracay Rum with 17 markers in just 19 minutes.
