MANILA, Philippines—Rookie Calvin Abueva dished out another double-double to help Alaska fend off Global Port, 101-95, Saturday in the 38th PBA Philippine Cup at the Dipolog City Sports Center in Dipolog.
Abueva, who had 20 points and 18 rebounds in the Aces’ 88-85 win over Meralco last Wednesday, totaled a career-high 21 points on top of 12 rebounds.
“Calvin (Abueva) was all over the place, JVee (Casio) came out and controlled the game,” said Alaska head coach Luigi Trillo. “We put ourselves in a good situation. We’re coming up against a strong team but with a quotient, we have a shot at a best-of-three.”
The Batang Pier didn’t go without a fight but the Aces just proved to be the steadier team down the stretch.
Abueva drained a triple to stop Global Port’s run, making it a seven-point game, 84-77, before JVee Casio found his rookie teammate to finish the break, 91-81, with 1:09 remaining.
Alaska improved to 7-6 while Global Port, officially bowing out of contention, sank to 1-11.
