Mindanao BIMP-EAGA favorite
GENERAL SANTOS CITY—Mindanao is shaping up as the heavy favorite in the 7th BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games set to unfold in the country’s tuna capital here today.
Besides enjoying home court edge, Mindanao is fielding a strong 90-man contingent expected to figure in the race for gold medals in seven sports.
Sabah, Malaysia, the defending overall champion which ruled the four-country meet in 2008 in Brunei, poses the biggest threat to Mindanao’s title aspiration. Also expected to put up a strong challenge are Indonesia’s South Sulawesi, Brunei’s Brun dar, Labuan and Sarawak of Malaysia and Puerto Princesa City aim to do the same.
The event got going with yesterday’s opening ceremony held at Mindanao State University with over 400 athletes competing in athletics, badminton, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis and pencak silat attending the brief rites.
