UAAP wars: Big weekend splurge by FEU athletes

FAR EASTERN University celebrated a victorious weekend in the UAAP by sweeping the athletics competition and staying unbeaten in football in separate venues.

The Lady Tamaraws captured an incredible ninth successive athletics championship while their male counterparts picked up their third consecutive crown in the four-day competition at Philsports field in Pasig.

Dalyn Carmen and Rookie of the Year Evalyn Palabrica led the Lady Tamaraws in amassing a runaway 534 points, while Jeson Cid ruled four events to put the Tamaraws on top with 390 points.

Cid, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, bagged four gold medals in the long jump as well as in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events.

In men’s football, the Tamaraws blasted the defending champion University of the Philippines Maroons, 3-0, at Erenchun field in Ateneo yesterday to stay on top.

Striker Jesus Meliza struck in the 19th and 63rd minutes, sandwiching Eric Giganto’s goal in the 42nd to power the Tamaraws to a second straight win.

The Maroons dropped to a 1-1-0 win-loss-draw card in a tie with University of Santo Tomas, which bested University of the East, 1-0.

Ateneo, NU prevail

In women’s volleyball, Alyssa Valdez and Dzi Gervacio combined for 29 points as Ateneo stayed unbeaten in three games with a straight-sets win over UST, 25-13, 25-16, 25-17, yesterday at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

National University also posted back-to-back victories after nipping UE, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14, 25-18, behind Myla Pablo’s career-high 22 points.
