Abueva is NCAA week’s best

MANILA—San Sebastian’s chances of reclaiming the NCAA crown hinges on the performance of Calvin Abueva.

Three games into the season, that statement is proving true.

After struggling in the opening-day win over Jose Rizal U—a game that Abueva missed because of suspension—the Stags have come out strong to score two easy wins and seize a share of top spot in the 87th NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

The athletic Abueva proved instrumental to the strong start, delivering a sterling all-around effort in the 87-60 victory over Perpetual Help last Monday.

The 6-foot-3 standout from Pampanga fired a career-high 31 points and pulled down nine rebounds that went with seven assists.

His exploits earned for him the ACCEL-316 NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week honor backed by Gatorade.

What’s impressive of Abueva’s performance this season is his conscious effort to get his teammates involved in the offense. He has averaged 6.5 assists so far this season.

“I want to maximize Calvin’s potential,” said Stags rookie coach Topex Robinson, noting Abueva’s importance to the team.
Abueva is averaging 23 points and 13 boards per game in two games for the Stags.
