Windfall for Que, Lascuña

NUSAJAYA, Johor, Malaysia—Angelo Que and Antonio Lascuña held their own on a final round of explosive scoring and secured fat paychecks by joining a five-way tie for fifth place in the weather-shortened $2 million Iskandar Johor Open here Sunday.

Que closed with a 4-under-par 68 while Lascuña birdied the last hole for a 69 as they finished at 205 along with Thais Thaworn Wiratchant (65) and Chapchai Nirat (70) and Japan’s Masanori Kobayashi (67).

The two Filipinos each won $60,440 (about P2.478 million).

Sergio Garcia of Spain fired a 61 to win by three shots with an 18-under 198 total over American Jonathan Moore, who also had a 61 in this season-ending tournament of the Asian Tour at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club that was reduced to 54 holes due to inclement weather.

Garcia, who clinched his second victory of the year, had the lowest final round by a winner in Asian Tour history. He birdied seven of the first nine holes to make the turn at 7-under 29, added birdies on 13 and 14 before a long rain delay, then returned to make it four in a row with birdies on 15 and 16.

Thai Thongchai Jaidee was third at 202 after a 65 while Daniel Chopra of Sweden wound up fourth at 203 with a closing 69.

Lascuña wound up 12th overall in the OOM with earnings of $266,321 while Que finished at No. 22 with $191,215.

Elmer Salvador, the third Filipino to survive the halfway cut, was dead last at 220 after a 77 but he finished 51st in the Order of Merit and nailed a Tour card next year.
