UST Tigresses, DLSU Lady Archers share lead in UAAP

MANILA—University of Santo Tomas and La Salle posted back-to-back victories over the weekend at the Blue Eagle Gym to share the early lead in the UAAP women’s basketball tournament.

The Tigresses, who stunned defending champion Adamson last week, dumped Ateneo, 64-51, with ace Juvelyn Andaya posting 17 points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Archers rallied to salvage a 55-52 win over University of the East even as the Lady Falcons, who are seeking a third straight crown, crushed National University, 70-58.

Hannah Viterbo paced the Lady Archers with 13 points while Inna Corcuerra backed her up with 11 points and 19 boards.

Anna Buendia buried 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Snow Penaranda also posted a double-double of 15 markers and 15 boards for the Lady Falcons.

Last year’s runner-up Far Eastern University routed University of the Philippines, 58-34, to tie its victim at 1-1.

Meanwhile, UST’s Jeric Fortuna was selected as the Accel-316 UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week, backed by Gatorade, in the men’s tournament.

The 5-foot-7 Fortuna powered the Tigers to a surprise 2-0 start by norming 17.5 points, four rebounds and five assists in UST’s wins over National University, 73-72, last Thursday and University of the East, 70-63, last Sunday.
