South Luzon-Bicol Champions League romp by Wildcats

THE COMPUTER Communications Development Institute Wildcats advanced to the zonal qualifiers after sweeping the South Luzon-Bicol regional leg of the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Championship recently in Sorsogon.
 
Led by Jay Diesta, the Wildcats slipped past M.S.Enverga University of Lucena City, 73-72, before routing Ateneo de Naga, 79-61, Amanda Cope College, 89-54, and Bicol College-Daraga, 90-63, in the three-day leg.
 
The Wildcats, the Basketball Intercollegiate Champions of Sorsogon, will join 12 other teams in the Luzon-Metro Manila zonal qualifiers next month.
 
Among the top contenders joining the Wildcats in the zonals are UAAP teams University of the East and National University and NCAA squads Letran and Arellano University.
 
The top four teams in the zonals will advance to the “Sweet 16” round of the only tournament that pits the champion varsity teams nationwide.
 
The next regional leg is set in Vigan where North and Central Luzon teams—University of Northern Philippines, University of Baguio, University of Luzon and the eventual champion of the United Central Luzon Athletics Association—will vie for a zonal berth from Oct. 15 to 18.
 
Two other regional legs are slated in the Visayas (Ioilo, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Bohol, Tacloban and Ormoc) and Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro, Davao City, General Santos City and Zamboanga).
 
Three-time UAAP champion Ateneo clinched an outright berth in the Sweet 16 final phase of the tournament sponsored by Smart-PLDT and ABS-CBN, along with runner-up Far Eastern University and semifinalists Adamson and La Salle.
 
NCAA’s top four teams—San Beda, San Sebastian, Jose Rizal University and Mapua—also earned top 16 slots along with the eventual finalists in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).
