UAAP women’s volleyball: La Salle shows no rust, blows out UP

MANILA, Philippines—Every Lady Spiker chipped in at least a point as La Salle blew by University of the Philippines, 25-15, 25-8, 25-8, Sunday in the 75th UAAP Women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

Michelle Gumabao and Victorana Galang churned out eight points apiece to lead a masterful performance by La Salle, which had 10 service aces while UP wound up with none.

Rookie setter Kim Fajardo starred with six points off the bench, and kept the Lady Spikers in fierce form in the third set even when they’re up 2-0 sets.

La Salle, which showed no rust coming from the holiday break, remained in second place with a 5-1 card.

“Lahat ng nangyari last year, nakalimutan na. Pag pasok ng new year, nag-umpisa na kami sa dapat paghandaan,” said head coach Ramil de Jesus.

“(Natutunan namin) ’wag maging complacent at dapat pursigido parin kahit sino kalaban,” said Fajardo in an interview.

An ace from Fajardo put La Salle in match point, before an error from UP ended the game—which was the story of the entire game.

The Lady Maroons, who have lost fifth straight, were plagued with unforced errors, which hampered them from being a threat all match.

UP also did not have the offensive firepower and the toughness to break down the defense as La Salle notched eight blocks.

Jay Aliyah Ong, who only played two full sets, scored four points for the Lady Maroons while the rest of the squad combined for nine markers.
