MANILA, Philippines—Caloy Garcia might have signed a job offer sheet, but he’s still not officially Letran’s head coach.
Garcia disclosed on Wednesday that the details of the head coaching job offer with the Knights are still being sorted out, but admits that there are a few things holding him back from taking it.
Number one stumbling block was the one-year contract being dangled by Letran.
Though this isn’t the first time Garcia, who handled St. Benilde for three years in the NCAA, was offered such short time contract— he’s hesitant, this time around.
“Yung 1 year contract, nakakadalawang isip kasi. How can you run a program in just one year,” said Garcia in an interview.
“How can you prove something in one year. (If long term), pwede ka sana magrecruit ng players.”
On Tuesday, former Knights head coach Louie Alas and his son Kevin broke on Twitter that Garcia has been appointed head coach, in an unexpected turn, instead of Larry Albano.
But the Letran administration has not released an official statement.
Another thing that’s holding Garcia back is not being able to bring his own coaching staff to the team.
“How can I handle a team without my own staff. Okay naman binibigay sakin na staff, it’s just different working with people you already worked with (in the past),” Garcia admits.
“Kasi (if I can’t bring my own), I have to teach my system to (both) the staff and the players instead of just running it. If I can’t bring my staff. It’s going to be hard for me.”
Garcia said that Letran wants the coaching staff to be alumni of the school, but the problem is, “di naman taga-Letran staff ko.”
The decision whether Garcia will take over the coaching reins— officially— will come out within the week.
“Nothing’s official until letran says it is. I only signed a job offer sheet, I didn’t sign a contract (yet),” Garcia finished.
