MANILA, Philippines — Talk ‘N Text has tapped youthful forward-center Keith Benson to reinforce its campaign in the 2013 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, with starts on February 8.
The 24-year-old Benson suited up for the Eerie Bayhawks in the NBA Developmental League, where he averaged 13.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
Head coach Norman Black is well aware that the lion’s share in any team’s success in an import-laden conference is anchored on their respective imports.
“Hopefully he [Benson] will be pretty good. But until we actually see him play against other imports, we’re not going to be sure how good he’s gonna be,” said Black.
The Texters start practicing with Benson after a few days break from their conquest of the 2012-2013 PBA Philippine Cup title last Wednesday.
Meanwhile, defending champion San Mig Coffee is trying its luck with Matt Rogers due to the unavailability of its first choice Denzel Bowles.
Head coach Tim Cone said that Bowles, who steered them (B-Meg) to a title last year, was the only one they wanted for conference, but was aware that the 23-year-old was tied up with the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
“I really wanted Denzel but he has a live contract in China and won’t be available for the opening,” said Cone on his Twitter account.
Rogers also played in the D-League, where he played for the Texas Rangers, before playing for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Summer League.
Though he’s only the second option, Rogers has always been on Cone’s radar since last year’s edition of the Commissioner’s Cup.
“Last year we were choosing between Matt Rogers and Denzel and we ended up with Denzel. This year we’re very happy to be able to get Matt,” Cone also said.
