UST Tigresses reclaim solo third in UAAP women’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas ran into a few bumps before cruising past University of the Philippines, 26-24, 25-9, 19-25, 25-15, Saturday in the UAAP Season 75 women’s volleyball at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Tigresses got back on the winning track after losing to the FEU Lady Tamaraws, 22-25, 29-27, 25-18, 25-23, last Sunday.

Judy Caballejo  came away with 15 points, 13 on attacks for UST.

“Nahirapan kami sa adjustments in the first set,” said Caballejo after UST scrambled to win in the extended opening set.

The Lady Maroons stretched the match after making the most out of the Tigresses error-prone third set.

UST committed 10 unforced errors as to UP’s three.

The Tigresses zoomed to a 13-5 lead on a service ace by sophomore Carmela Tunay. Maika Ortiz and Mari Banaticla provided the finishing kick.

An ace by Ortiz, who finished with 16 points with five aces, then a spike by Banaticla put UST in match point.

The win by the Tigresses put them back in solo third place at 5-3 behind league-leaders Ateneo and De La Salle at 6-1.

The Lady Maroons reeled to their seventh straight setback after breaking into the win column in their first game of the season.
