Carlos leads CanAm Open with 68
CANLUBANG, Philippines—Youthful Jobim Carlos fired a four-under-par 68 Wednesday to grab the limelight from the big guns after the first 18 holes of the prestigious Canlubang Amateur Open at the North course here.
The 17-year-old, who debuted in men’s play by helping Canlubang retain the PAL Interclub title in Bacolod last February, seized the lead by two shots despite three-putting the 18th green in his 34-34 card.
Carlos, who spearheaded the Philippine Under-18 team to the Lion City Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, recently, birdied No. 7 then added three more in a row from No. 9.
Reigning national champion Clyde Mondilla and Art Arbole, another one of Cangolf’s young blood, fired identical 70s like Wang Jeung-hun.
Former Canlubang mainstay Zannie Bou Gialon was in solo fifth with a 71 while Jessie Balasabas, Sonny Villaber and Joey Huerva matched par 72s.
Defending champion Jonel Ababa struggled with a 76 while Mark Fernando, the former RP Am champ, was just a stroke better with a 75.
