Altas reassert dominance in NCAA volleyball with third straight title

MANILA, Philippines—The University of Perpetual Help continued its reign in the NCAA men’s volleyball after sweeping Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, in their championship series for its third straight title Monday at the Arena in San Juan.

Edmar Sanchez led the Altas, who capped off their stellar season with their 33rd straight win dating back to two seasons ago, with 22 points on two blocks.

The Generals were able to take a set behind the power-hitting Howard Mojica, who unleashed a team-high 20 points.

Mojica though, couldn’t come through late in the fourth set as his spike went out that sealed Perpetual Help’s win.

EAC put up a good fight as it kept in step with Perpetual Help in the fourth set, able to knot the count at 15, before Sanchez, who took home the MVP award, imposed his will.

Skipper Jay dela Cruz pumped in 19 points with eight digs for the Altas, who easily won, 25-22, 25-17, 25-16, in Game 1 last Saturday withstanding Mojica’s 27-point effort.

Aside from Sanchez winning the MVP award, Adam Daquer and and Sandy Montero were named as the best blocker and best receiver of the season, respectively.

Mojica wound up as the tournament’s best scorer while teammate Francis Allen Yu bagged the best setter award.
