Perpetual spikers log golden double

Still peerless, Perpetual Help copped a double championship in the NCAA volleyball tournament for the second straight season.

The Lady Altas completed Perpetual’s twin win yesterday by disposing San Sebastian for back-to-back crowns, just a couple of days after the Altas captured their third straight men’s title with a 14-game season sweep.

Honey Tubino, April Sartin and Sandra delos Santos teamed up to power the Lady Altas to a surprise straight-set victory over the Lady Stags, 25-19, 25-17, 25-16, in the deciding Game 3 at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

“We didn’t expect it to be quick,” said season Most Valuable Player Norie Diaz, who starred with 21 points in Game 2 last Monday where the Lady Altas forged a winner-take-all with a 21-25, 25-12, 28-26, 29-27 triumph.

Tubino topscored with 17, Sartin added 15 hits and last season’s MVP Delos Santos fired half of her 12 points on service aces against the Lady Stags.

“We were able to study Soltones’ attacks,” Perpetual coach Jason Sapin said of Gretchel Soltones, the star rookie who led the Lady Stags to a 26-24, 26-24, 22-25, 27-25 Game 1 upset of the Lady Altas.

In the men’s side, the Altas wrapped up their perfect run behind MVP Edmar Sanchez by disposing Emilio Aguinaldo College in Game 1 ( 25-22, 25-17, 25-16) and Game 2 ( 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21).
