Saludar cements bronze

Light Flyweight Victor Saludar got off to a spectacular start on opening day of the 31st Annual Tammer Cup with a first round demolition of Al Mas Dhandhani of the United Arab Emirates at the Pymikki Palloiluhalissa Stadium in Finland.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) executive director Ed Picson said in a message to the Inquirer that Saludar, who is the youngest in the four-man PLDT-Abap national team, “used hardly a minute of fight time in disposing of his foe.”

A short video clip transmitted by Picson showed Saludar jumping on Dhandhani with an unanswered flurry that drove his opponent into his own corner, forcing referee Mik Basi of England to give him a standing eight count after some 30 seconds.

“We instructed Victorico to go for the jugular early so he could be rested for the bigger fights ahead,” Picson said.

The UAE boxer connected with a counter left straight forcing Saludar to back off for a few seconds before the shorter Filipino launched another furious attack forcing the referee to call a halt at 1:51 of the opening round and assure the Filipino of a bronze medal.

Delfin Boholst also barged into the semifinals with a 4-1 victory over Scotland’s Jason Easton.
