La Salle, Ateneo volleybelles eye title rematch

LA SALLE and Ateneo try to arrange a repeat of last year’s title showdown as the two rivals battle separate rivals today in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Archers, vying for a third straight crown, aim for a quick finish against surprise semifinalist National University at 2 p.m., while the Lady Eagles also hope to dispose of Adamson in their 3:30 p.m. duel.

Both the Lady Archers and the Lady Eagles only need to win once in the Final Four after claiming the twice-to-beat advantage as incentive for finishing 1-2 in the elimination round.

Three other sports, though, canceled their championship matches yesterday due to inclement weather.

The do-or-die Game 3 baseball championship between defending champion NU and Ateneo has been moved to 12 noon on Tuesday at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Adamson also needs to wait until Tuesday to wrap up its bid for a third straight softball crown against NU in Game 2 of their title series at 9 a.m., also at Rizal ballpark.

In men’s tennis, the title series between University of Santo Tomas and NU has been rescheduled tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

UP and UST, meanwhile, dispute the remaining women’s title berth, also at 9 a.m., where the winner will go up against No. 1 La Salle.

In women’s volleyball, the Lady Archers vie to stretch their unbeaten run to 14 games behind reigning MVP Abigail Maraño, Michelle Gumabao, Ara Galang, Mika Reyes and Kim Fajardo.
