MANILA—Calvin Abueva and San Sebastian gave Lyceum a jolt of reality as the Stags forged an 82-57 rout over the league newcomer to stay unbeaten in five games in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament Monday at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Abueva—who has posted double-double numbers in all his games so far this season—had another stellar outing of 28 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
“I told the players coming into this game that they’re (Pirates) enjoying their stay here; they’re pretty much enjoying their camp here in the NCAA,” said Stags coach Topex Robinson. “We want to spoil them rather than us being spoiled by Lyceum.”
Perpetual Help pulled off a thrilling triple overtime victory against Jose Rizal University, 79-77, to snap its winless run.
George Allen—fielded only in the second extra period—scored from underneath at the buzzer after a mad scramble for the ball to lift the Altas to their first victory in five games.
“He wasn’t supposed to play because of his injury, but we really had no choice [after several players fouled out and got injured],” Perpetual coach Jimwel Gican said of Allen, who played his first game since sustaining an ankle injury in their opening game.
Jet Vidal fired 21 points to lead the Altas, who pinned on the Bombers their third loss in five games.
Ronald Pascual and Ian Sangalang, along with Abueva, again made it a big game for San Sebastian’s top trio as the Stags coasted to a 24-point advantage, 64-40, by the end of the third period.
Pascual collected 18 markers, four rebounds and five assists, while Sangalang had a double-double of 16 points and 14 boards.
The Pirates, who had posted upsets in their early run as this season’s lone guest team, slipped to 4-3.
