MARIANNE Tongco produced the biggest shot of her collegiate career to help power Adamson to a 61-58 win over College of St. Benilde in the championship game of the 2nd Dickies-FCBL (Filipino-Chinese Basketball League) Women’s Cup Saturday at Philippine Buddhacare Academy in Quezon City.
Tongco nailed a clutch triple under shotclock pressure to give Adamson a 59-58 lead in the last 39 seconds to the delight of the Lady Falcons bench before Janelle de Castro deflected an attempt by the Lady Blazers’ Jennifer Mayol to seal the victory.
De Castro, who emerged as the Dickies Finals MVP after finishing with 23 points, iced the game with an insurance basket.
She also had 12 boards and two blocks that made up for the anemic shooting of teammate Mary Snow Penaranda, who emerged the MVP of the tournament also backed by Smart Telecom, Powerhouse, CW Home Depot, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum and Hapee.
Penaranda led the Mythical Five along with FEU’s Vangie Soriano and Camille Sambile, UST’s Mika Cortez and CEU’s Folashade Ogunsemoyin.
Meantime, FEU, drawing an inspired game from Soriano, beat La Salle, 48-45, to finish third.
Officials of Dickies, assisted by tournament director Horacio Lim, handed the championship trophy to the champion.
