SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLDS Maika Jae Tanpoco and Marian Jade Capadocia downed their respective foes yesterday to barge into the singles quarterfinals of the 6th ITF Malacca International junior championships in Malaysia.
Tanpoco, ranked 320th in the world, shocked fifth seed Ria Vaidya of Singapore, 6-2, 6-4, to move up against Indonesia’s Efriliya Herlina, the third seed who outlasted Myanmar’s Nilar Win, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, in the Grade 4 tournament.
The No. 7 Capadocia advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over China’s Zhang Ying. The back-to-back PCA Open women’s singles champion will next face Chinese Taipei’s Huang En-pei, who ousted Uzbekistan’s Sarvinoz Saidhujaewa, 6-3, 6-2.
Tanpoco later paired with Alyssa Boey of Malaysia to oust India’s Tatachar Venugopal and China’s Zhang Zijao, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the quarterfinals. They will face top seeds Rheeya Doshi of Singapore and Ryoka Okamura of Japan, who downed Indonesians Idhun Sateati and Woyla Waluyo, 6-4, 6-2. Marc Anthony Reyes
