MANILA—Its bid to see action in the Asian Games in Guangzhou next month scuttled, the national women’s team is relishing the opportunity to prove its worth in the 7th Southeast Asian Basketball Association Women’s Championship from Oct. 24 to 29 at theNinoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
Team officials who appeared at Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue in Manila, expressed confidence that the national squad, now called Perlas ng Pilipinas, can nail a first title for the country in the biennial event.
The team’s performance in the tournament was supposed to be the basis for its inclusion in the Asian Games squad, but with the Asiad draw already completed, delegation officials were forced to strike them off the roster.
“I don’t have any doubts that we will win the gold,” declared team manager Cynthia Tiu.
