PHILIPPINE Army grabbed its first point of the United Football League season by holding Green Archers Globe to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Veteran striker Meliton Pelayo put the Armymen in front 11 minutes into the first half only for the Archers to equalize through Far Eastern U standout Jess Melliza.
Still without a point
The result hauled Army out of the bottom, leaving fellow Armed Forces side, Air Force, as the only squad that has yet to notch a point this season.
The draw prevented the Archers from tying Pachanga Diliman for fifth after dropping points for the fifth time in six matches.
Two of the foremost homegrown players in the country in Archers’ Chieffy Caligdong and Army’s Ed Sacapano made their mark in the match.
Mr. Football
Caligdong delivered the cross that Melliza finished off for his second goal in as many matches in the second half.
Named Mr. Football by the Philippine Sportswriters Association together with Caligdong recently, Sacapano proved his worth with a string of brilliant saves that preserved the point for Army.
Pelayo opened the scoring with a scorching left-footed volley from just inside the box.
