MANILA, Philippines – Alaska’s game plan against Petron Blaze was simple: dump the ball down to Sonny Thoss and let the big man go to work.
And Thoss, the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week (March 4 to 10), came through with 14 points on seven-of-nine shooting from the field to go along with two rebounds and four assists.
“Against Petron we felt we could dump it into him (Thoss) and you saw how he got his teammates involved to win the game with the passes to Dondon (Hontiveros) and JV (Casio),” said Aces head coach Luigi Trillo.
Those Thoss’ dimes helped Alaska create separation from a 70-69 count en route to the Aces critical win that put them back on top of the standings at 6-1.
“Sonny is a guy who will sacrifice his stats for the greater good of our team. He has to get the import at times and box him out, that is why his rebounds are down this conference. He is the consummate teammate,” added Trillo. “He makes his game do the talking. I always hope my son can grow up and act like Sonny. A very humble man. He is a big reason why we are playing with such great spirit and teamwork.
“Walang kayabang-yabang proud (He’s no arrogant). He is not only a good player and a good teammate, he is a good person.”
