MANILA, Philippines — Weathering a late game charge, Air21 defeated Alaska, 74-68, to win two in a row in the 2013 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Struggling early in the conference, head coach Franz Pumaren relished the Express’  back-to-back win and credited their preparation for an improved 3-5 card.

“We really came prepared for what we’re going to do. My coaching staff did a good job,” said Pumaren. “It’s the first back to back win for us.”

The large part of the credit goes to Mike Dunigan, who was relentless on both ends of the court to finish with 25 points, 13 rebounds and five swats.

With Alaska tying the ball game at 63, the Express denied the opponent the opportunity the chance to taste the lead anew with Dunigan scoring the next four points.

Nelbert Omolon, meanwhile, pushed their lead to 71-66 with 1:22 to go after RJ Jazul scored Alaska’s final threat, and then  Air21 put on the finishing touches.

The Aces were ahead by as many as 10 in the first quarter before Dunigan worked to flip the script in favor of the Express and a 45-32 lead in the third.

Robert Dozier finished with 17 points for Alaska, which absorbed its second loss of the conference.
