Capadocia takes it; Arcilla strikes anew

MARIAN Capadocia and Johnny Arcilla shared the limelight for the second straight week as they claimed the titles in the third Cainta-Palawan Pawnshop Open Tennis Championships last Sunday at Brookside Hills Tennis Club in Cainta.

Using solid groundstrokes, Capadocia continued her mastery of Clarice Patrimonio, 6-2, 6-2, to rule ladies play.

It marked the second straight week that Capadocia defeated the No. 2 Patrimonio for the crown. She also won, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, in the Olivarez Cup last week.

Arcilla also picked up where he left off last week, outlasting PJ Tierro, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), in the event presented by Palawan Pawnshop and also backed by Mayor Mon Ilagan and Babolat.

Playing in his second final after beating Vincent Anasta in the Olivarez Cup, Arcilla broke his foe once in the first set.

Arcilla completed a double later, after teaming up with Anasta to beat Marc Reyes and Tierro, 6-4, 6-3, for the doubles title.

Marinel Rudas and Edilyn Balanga pulled off a pulsating 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 triumph over sisters Clarice and Christine Patrimonio for the ladies doubles title.

The victory is expected to boost the 17-year-old Capadocia’s status as No. 1 in the ladies ranking next month.

Meanwhile, the Palawan Pawnshop regional age-group tourney starts Saturday, also at Brookside. Cedelf P.Tupas
