Unigames: Eagles, Tams lead Metro cage binge
Ateneo and Far Eastern University showed Metro Manila’s undisputed might in basketball yesterday in the 2010 Philippine Sports Commission-University Games in Dumaguete City.
The Blue Eagles, who recently copped their third straight UAAP championship, kicked off their title defense with back-to-back routs over the University of Northern Philippines, 88-60, and Mindanao State University-Marawi, 92-42, to show the way in Group A.
The Tamaraws, the losing UAAP finalist, also stayed unbeaten in two Group B games after blasting Lyceum, 91-71, and Negros Oriental State University, 120-29.
Adamson and Rizal Technological University paced Group C with the Falcons trouncing Ateneo de Davao, 88-47, and the Blue Thunders downing Asian College of Science and Technology, 95-84.
National University routed Holy Cross Davao, 86-40, while University of San Carlos crushed Holy Angel University, 64-48, in Group D.
In women’s action, defending champion Adamson opened its bid with a 68-54 triumph over Lyceum.
University of the Philippines also got off to a strong start with victories over Silliman University, 74-31, and St. Louis University, 77-44.
But the highly regarded Visayan squads made sure they clicked again in football, with West Negros University opening its title-retention bid in the men’s side by edging University of Negros Occidental 1-0 in Group B.
UP-Diliman upended Siliman, 4-2, in Group A and University of St. La Salle of Bacolod whipped University of Northern Philippines, 20-0, in Group C.
