HOW UNLUCKY can a man be!
Less than a month ago, on March 27, Police Officer 2 Anselmo Lazatin landed at the East Avenue Hospital after he tried to pacify rampaging PBA import Jamelle Cornley who went into a fit of rage when he found out that the three women he had picked up and taken with him to his hotel room had stolen the money in his wallet.
During the scuffle, the burly import got violent and punched Lazatin in the jaw. Lazatin was knocked down, hitting the floor on his back.
The police officer was hit so hard he had to be rushed to the nearest hospital where he was initially reported to be in critical condition. Meanwhile, Cornley was arrested and thrown in a Quezon City jail.
The last we heard of PO2 Lazatin, he had filed direct assault charges against Cornley who was incarcerated for several days.

A few days ago, PO2 Lazatin was again on television. At first I thought they were showing a file video of the police officer who had been assaulted by Cornley, but no, the import had nothing to do with the video.
Last April 17, Lazatin found himself in familiar surroundings. He was again confined at the East Avenue Medical Center where he was rushed after a vehicular accident.
A police report said Lazatin was on his way home from work at noon when his motorcycle was hit by a car that sped away shortly after the accident.
The driver didn’t even bother to stop and help the victim who lay sprawled on the ground along the corner of East Avenue and V. Luna Streets in Barangay Pinyahan.
It was some good Samaritans who rushed Lazatin to the hospital.
Lazatin sustained injuries to his left shoulder and the left side of his torso. He told fellow police officers he had gotten a good look at the black hit-and-run car including the plate number. It looks like he will have another legal case in his hands as soon as he discovers the identity of the driver.
One of the first things Lazatin needs to do when he gets discharged from hospital is look for a priest who can bless and exorcise him of bad spirits.
Imagine, it had been only five days since he reported back to work after the lengthy initial confinement at East Avenue, and he figured in another accident again!
A week after the Donaire debacle in New York, hardly anybody talks about the subject anymore. Even my colleague who was there to cover the fight refused to make any comment when he returned to Manila.
But about a couple of days ago, I got a creepy message from a boxing fan, who’s deep into paranormal practice.
“Remember it was mentioned in Kris Aquino’s morning TV show that Nonito Donaire Jr.’s family had lit a candle last Nov. 1 for the boxer,” he reminded me.
“Ipinagtirik nila ng kandila,” Rachel Donaire had confided to Kris when the latter visited the Donaires in their Las Vegas home.
Nobody knows for what intention the candle was lit for, but my paranormal friend said it could have had something to do with the Donaire loss, “even if Nonito had won over Mexican Jorge Ace in December, a month and a half after the Undas.”
Sometimes these rituals take some time to take effect, he said.
