ALJON Mariano took over in the final two minutes as University of Santo Tomas dealt Ateneo its first loss with a 63-57 decision yesterday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Mariano pumped in six of the Tigers’ last 10 points in a key run that snapped the Tigers’ six-minute scoreless spell and put them ahead for good in the rematch of last season’s UAAP finals.
La Salle picked up a second straight win with the veterans leading the charge this time in the Green Archers’ 98-61 dumping of winless Southwestern University.
Adamson also had a thrilling start as Don Trollano nailed the game-winning free throws to lift the Falcons to a 68-67 escape over Far Eastern University.
Trollano picked up a foul off Terrence Romeo with 17.4 seconds left after the Tamaraws had grabbed the lead, 67-66, on an Anthony Hargrove basket with 34.4 ticks remaining.
Mariano finished with 19 points, while Karim Abdul had 14 markers and 11 boards to lead the Tigers to their first win in two outings.
“We reminded him (Mariano) that he has to be our leader,” said assistant mentor Estong Ballesteros, who called the shots for indisposed coach Pido Jarencio.
The Eagles, who went scoreless in the final two minutes, absorbed their first loss in four games.
Almond Vosotros fired nine of his 17 points from three-point range and dished out five assists for the Archers, whose standout rookies starred in their opening-day win over UST.
