NATIONAL Geographic Channel is closely coordinating with the police and local government to beef up security for the 4th Earth Day Run set Sunday at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
In the aftermath of the recent Boston Marathon bombings that raised safety concerns in the local running community, organizers will deploy additional security force, race marshalls and K9 units along the race routes. More water stations will likewise be set up because of the hot weather.
EDR is anticipating 12,000 runners in the 21K, 10K, 5K and 3K races.
“Let’s not put our guards down,” said Southern Police District chief Gen. Jose Erwin T. Villacorte. “Let’s be vigilant in protecting our runners. All runners must cross the finish line safely.”
The 21K race will be fired off at 4 a.m., the 10K run at 5 a.m., 5K at 6 a.m. and 3K at 6:30 a.m.
The Nat Geo Earth Day Run began in 2010 with 6,000 runners and increased to 10,000 in the last two years. This year, three trees will be registered under each runner’s name. Romina S. Austria
