MANILA, Philippines — Women from all over the Philippines now have a chance to show that basketball is not just a men’s sport with the launch of the Jr. WNBA next year.
Building on the success of the Jr. NBA Philippines program — thriving for the sixth straight year — NBA Asia has decided to give Filipinas a chance to improve their basketball skills in the first ever Jr. WBNA.
“[The chance] to introduce the first-ever Jr. WNBA program in the Philippines is a great step in bringing the game to more of our fans,” said Scott Levy, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of NBA Asia in a statement.
The NBA, once again, is partnering with Alaska in promoting the sports of basketball from all over the country.
This year, close to 1,300 kids aged 10-14 joined the regional training camps in Davao, Lucena, Dagupan and Manila. The National Training Camp concludes on Sunday where 10 players will be given an Authentic NBA experience.
Jr. NBA has produced players who went on to start in their respective colleges like University of Santo Tomas’ Aljon Mariano and University of the Philippines’ Henry Asilum.
Now, the women ballers get that same chance.
“Both the NBA and Alaska share a commitment to the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles among Filipino youth through sport, and we look forward to continued collaboration between our two companies to grow the game of basketball,” also said Levy.
