Cebu’s SWU rallies past EAC for 2nd win

MANILA, Philippines – Southwestern University picked up the pace in the second half and defeated Emilio Aguinaldo College 80-75 Wednesday in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the Arena in San Juan.

Down 4-21 in the first quarter, the Cobras got hot and caught up with the Generals — and then drew crucial buckets in the last three minutes to grab their second win of the tournament.

“We started overconfident and then we adjusted and made a run. Little by little, we made it,” said coach Mike Reyes, who has been leading the Cebu-based team in Manila.

Cameroonian Landry Sanjo continued his dominating performance, leading the Cobras — who play their last game in the tournament on Saturday — with 23 points, 16 rebounds, one assist and steal and five blocks.

Filipino-Canadian Adam Mohammed added 16 points, including a dagger triple from the right corner that put SWU up 76-71 with 1:07 left to play before freethrows Javy Bautista put them safely ahead.

“Luckily, we made their shots towards the end,” said Reyes, younger brother of National team head coach Chot Reyes.

The Generals, meanwhile, absorbed their second setback in as many outings — falling short in the fourth quarter even after leading by as many as 21 points, 38-17, with 4:28 in the second quarter.

Francis Munsayac led EAC with 26 points while Jan Jamon had 24, as they knocked down six triples each, but on a losing effort.
