Tigresses stay unscathed; FEU’s Palmera fires 44

MANILA—University of Santo Tomas stretched its winning run to four even as second-running Far Eastern University drew a record 44 points from Raiza Palmera in separate UAAP women’s basketball tournament games over the weekend at the Blue Eagle Gym in Loyola Heights.

Juvelyn Andaya fired 16 points and Paula Bombeo had 13 plus 11 rebounds as the Tigresses turned back the pesky National University Lady Bulldogs, 62-58, to stay as the only unbeaten squad.

Palmera, who also posted five rebounds, six assists and four steals, powered the Lady Tamaraws to their third win in four games with an 88-50 rout of the winless University of the East Lady Warriors.

The 44-point output of one of the national team’s sweet shooters is the highest in a single basketball game this season.

Meanwhile, UP forward Carlo Gomez has been slapped with a one-game suspension by commissioner Andy Jao yesterday.

Gomez, who averages 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds, was ejected for punching Ateneo’s Nico Salva in the groin late in the fourth quarter of the game won by the Blue Eagles, 77-57, last Saturday.

The slumping Maroons, who own a 1-3 record, will miss the services of the 6-foot-3 Gomez against the second-running FEU (4-1) on Thursday.

The Accel-3XVI UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week presented by Gatorade went to La Salle’s returning guard LA Revilla for his consistent plays that helped propel the Green Archers to a share of third place.

Revilla, who missed the last two seasons because of an illnes, averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, four steals, 1.5 assists and a block in the Archers’ two recent victories.
