Shakey’s V-League: Ateneo tipped to tab second win

MANILA–First conference titlist Ateneo hopes to sustain its solid form when it tackles Perpetual Help, even as two more teams debut Tuesday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 8 Open Conference at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles will go into the 4 p.m. duel with the Lady Altas oozing with confidence after a dominant showing against newcomer Maynilad Sunday.

Ateneo, which opted not to field a guest player this time to maximize the exposure of its players who will see action in the UAAP, overpowered Maynilad in straight sets, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22.

Powerhouse squads Army and Navy open their campaigns when they collide at 2 p.m.

Alyssa Valdez and Fille Cainglet, who powered the Lady Eagles to victory with a combined 35 hits against the Water Dragons, will again be at the forefront of the attack along with setter Jem Ferrer, whose timely drop shots also proved vital Sunday.

The Lady Altas will try to counter with guest player Giza Yumang, April Sartin, Ronnery Dela Cruz and Sandra Delos Santos.

The Army-Navy clash could pass up for an All-Star game of the league.

Former Far Eastern U star Rachelle Ann Daquis will be joining forces with the Carolino sisters, Michelle and Mayeth, as well as former Lyceum reinforcement Dahlia Cruz for the Army volleybelles.

The Navy lineup also looks stacked with former league MVP Neriza Bautista, Michelle Laborte and Suzanne Roces on the roster along with standout setter Janet Serafica.
