Country’s top snipers reload for rare tournament Aug. 20

MANILA—The country’s finest riflemen will show their wares in the Philippine National Shooting Association 2011 Sniper Shooting Competition at the Taytay Tactical Rifle Range in Rizal from Aug. 20.

The first competition to be held under new PNSA president Mikee Romeo will feature the small bore rifle (.22) and high-powered rifle (223) events.

“It’s going to be a tough and exciting event since this is national in scope,” said Romero. “Shooters from Cebu and Bacolod are eager to challenge their counterparts from Luzon. I’m certain the rivalry will spice up the competition.”

The PNSA expects 150 snipers to join the event, including those from elite military and police units.

The tournament starts with the small-bore rifle event on Aug. 20 and 21, while the high-powered is set Aug. 27 and 28.

The small-bore rifle contest will be for a distance of 200 meters while the high-powered event is set at 300 meters.

The high-powered rifle event will have two categories—Open (with electronic sighting device) and Standard.

Among those vying in the Open division are Randy Paronda, Galahad Vicencio, Mark Tan, Louie Gonzales and Jun Magno. Sony Alonso, Boy Banaag, Cris Reyes and Nino Aspe banner the field in the standard class.

But Romero also believes the entries from Mindanao, especially from Davao City, are capable of pulling off a surprise.
