JERON Teng fueled a fourth-quarter surge as La Salle outlasted winless Lyceum, 70-64, in a fight-marred match of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup yesterday at Filoil Flying V Arena
Teng dropped 19 points—seven in a key run that padded the Green Archers’ slim 48-47 lead to 61-53—as La Salle stayed unbeaten in four games in Group B.
Big men Norbert Torres (10 points and nine rebounds) and Jason Perkins (nine points and 13 rebounds) also helped the Archers stay ahead in the closing minutes of the game that saw the ejection of six players following a bench-clearing incident at the 3:40 mark.
“Mindset was a big factor, we did not come to the game prepared mentally,” said La Salle coach Gee Abanilla.
University of Santo Tomas also had a tough time before slipping past San Sebastian, 83-79, in the first game.
Aljon Mariano buried 13 of his 23 points in the final quarter, the last four inside the last 70 seconds, to lead the Tigers to their second triumph in four outings.
“We haven’t been complete in practice,” said UST coach Pido Jarencio.
A hard foul on La Salle’s Gab Reyes started the La Salle-Lyceum fracas that led to the ejection of Archers Arnold Van Opstal, Mat Salem and Robert Bolick and Pirates John Azores, Shaq Alanes and Wilson Baltazar.
The Archers built a 10-point advantage in the third period, 46-36, before Dexter Zamora sparked the Pirates’ rally that trimmed the gap to 48-47.
The Pirates remained winless in three outings while the Stags fell to 2-4. With a report from Carla Perez and Nikka Valenzuela
