SAN MIGUEL Beer may have to make do without Chris Banchero a bit longer when the Beermen go for a repeat over Sports Rev Thailand in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) today at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Although the Beermen clinched the No. 1 spot even minus their topnotch guard, coach Leo Austria said the team feels the impact of Banchero’s absence in their bid to keep their record run going.

“We miss his ability to break down the defenses with his slashing and quickness,” said Austria.  “Although we’re winning lately, we will definitely need his services in the semifinals when the competition gets tougher. ”

Banchero, sidelined by a torn tendon on his thigh, sat out for the fourth straight game when the Beermen rallied past the Slammers, 78-61, three days ago for a 17-3 record.

“Although we’re winning lately, we will definitely need his services in the semifinals when the competition gets tougher.” But Banchero’s absence continued to push several local players to raise their game and Austria said the Beermen remain motivated to stretch their winning streak to 15 in their 4 p.m. rematch with the Thais.

“Although we already achieved our initial objective (No. 1 seed), we have to keep on winning to give us enough confidence,” said Austria.  “Of course, there is pride in keeping our winning streak alive.”

Import Brian Williams led the Beermen against the Slammers with a double-double of 16 points and 20 boards while Asi Taulava scored 12.

Hanging on to fourth with a 7-13 card, the Slammers hope to challenge the Beermen anew behind Christien Charles, Darrius Brannon and Filipino import guard Froilan Baguion.
