Young Malig leads bowling Open all-events

FIFTEEN-year-old Ivan Malig of TBAM-Prima grabbed the early lead in Class O all-events of the 42nd Philippine International Open tenpin bowling championships Monday at Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall in Cainta, Rizal.

A member of the National Youth squad, Malig collected 1,460 pinfalls on impressive scores of 649 in singles, 429 in doubles and 382 in team to pull away from Sletba’s Lito Santarinala (1,364) and BALP’s Angel Tolentino (1,332).

Malig was a member of the Youth team which competed in the recent Asian Youth championships in Hong Kong.

JD Campos, another young TBAM-Prima stalwart who powered his team to top spot in the men’s Class O competition, was 13 pins shy of matching Malig’s total as he submitted 1,447 (537 for singles, 400 doubles and 516 team) to move ahead in Class B all-events.

Campos finished 84 and 108 pins away from Sletba’s Ted Victorino and TBAM-Prima’s Dafort Diokno, respectively.

Other early all-event leaders in the 15-day kegfest were PBAP’s Jai Ramirez (1,103) in ladies’ Class O, TBAM’s Mon Camba (1,356) and PBA’s Lynn Tan in men’s and ladies’ Class A and TBAM-Prima’s Jasha Jaron (1,312) in ladies’ Class B.

PBA’s Nilo Penado (1,325) and SLETBA’s Papio de Dios (1,325) trailed Camba, PBA’s Nelia Santos (1,187) came in second to Tan, while TBAM-Prima’s Angel Lazo (1,178) and ATBA’s Ching Co (1,175) followed Jaron.

The tournament is sanctioned by the World Tenpin Bowling Association and the Asian Bowling Federation and organized by the Philippine Bowling Congress in cooperation with Sta. Lucia Mall, Boysen Paints, the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission.  It is also supported by the University of Perpetual Help System, Richmonde Hotel Ortigas and the National Bowling Tour.
