La Salle bags PCCL title after sweeping SWU

MANILA, Philippines — Jeron Teng scored 16 points as UAAP champion De La Salle held off Southwestern University, 70-61, in Game 2 to win its second Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) title Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Green Archers went on a decisive 12-0 run that turned a precarious five-point edge to a commanding 68-51 lead with 2:46 left.

The Cobras pulled to within five, 51-56, after trailing by 11 entering the fourth quarter.

But a personal foul and a technical foul in one possession by Daryl Goloran, who fouled out with still 6:10 remaining, proved to be too costly for SWU as it sparked La Salle’s fourth-quarter surge.

“We just tried to be very aggressive on defense. We stepped up our intensity also,” said DLSU head coach Juno Sauler.

Teng, who was named Finals MVP,  also collected four rebounds and five assists, including a pass that led to a Jason Perkins jumper with 17.8 seconds left that doused a mini-run by SWU.

Almond Vosotros played through a bad ankle and still had 15 points with three triples, including a shot-clock beating trey that made it, 66-51, with 4:05 to go.

Landry Sanjo paced the Cobras, who beat Far Eastern University to enter the Finals, with 16 points and 13 rebounds while former Green Archer Mac Tallo had 15 points.

The Archers also won the National championship in 2008.
