St. Benilde dethrones San Beda for NCAA overall crown
MANILA, Philippines — St. Benilde, this season’s host, clinched the NCAA season 89 general championship, dethroning San Beda.
The Blazers ended the Red Lions’ three-year reign after a tight race, as the two schools wound up with 550.5 and 544 points, respectively, after the final tally.
Article continues after this advertisementSt. Benilde, which reclaimed the overall crown they last won in 2009, got the clinching boost from their championship in the men’s beach volley which was worth 50 points.
San Beda only got six points in that competition held at Puerto Galera two weeks ago for finishing dead last.
The Blazers also got 30 points in the track and field event last weekend while the Red Lions garnered 15.
Article continues after this advertisementSt. Benilde was officially awarded on Thursday after the NCAA cheerleading contest, which marks the close of the competition, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Coming in third was San Sebastian, which got max points in women’s beach volleyball and chess, with 428 points, while fourth place went to Arellano with 413.5 points.
Letran finished fifth with 371 points, Emilio Aguinaldo College sixth with 367, Perpetual Help seventh with 340, Lyceum at eighth with 279, Mapua at ninth with 170 and Jose Rizal University at last place with 132.
The champion teams in 12 sports were also feted by the league before the winners of the cheerleading event was announced.
San Beda, meanwhile, triumphed in the juniors’ overall championship by a big margin after garnering 311 points. A far second was St. Benilde, who had 274 points.
