BUCKING fatigue, Cagayan Valley kicked off its title defense with a decisive straight-set victory over Philippine National Police, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18, in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Open Conference Thursday at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Aiza Maizo and Wenneth Eulalio shone in a solid blocking game as the Rising Suns, who recently defended their crown in the Cagayan Friendship Games, denied 11 of the PNP Lady Patrollers’ attempts.

“We’re a little bit tired, but it’s a good thing we were able to manage the minutes of my players,” said Cagayan coach Nes Pamilar.

In the second game, PLDT Home Telpad debuted strong despite the absence of four key players in a 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 triumph over University of the Philippines.

Maizo, who teamed up with Eulalio to account for six of the team’s 11 blocks, finished with 11 points, while Janine Marciano also had a couple of aces in an 11-point effort.

But Pamilar knows there’s more work to do for the Rising Suns, who have to do without their two Thai imports this conference, to match their historic 16-0 championship romp last year.

“We need to jell more,” said Pamilar, who drew quality minutes from their new recruits led by former Adamson ace Pau Soriano.

PLDT, meanwhile, pulled off an easy win behind San Sebastian star Gretchel Soltones despite the short-notice absence of last conference’s MVP Dindin Santiago, Abby Maraño, Carmina Aganon and Royze Estampa.

The veteran quartet failed to suit up in PLDT’s debut due to contractual obligations with other teams in a rival women’s volleyball league.

“They can’t play until the other league is over,” said PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb.
