SW-Masters nails ‘4-peat’
CEBU CITY—Pushed to the wall for the first time in the last four years, Manila Southwoods-Masters yesterday responded like a true champion and won by the narrowest of margins to complete its ‘four-peat’ in the PAL Ladies Interclub Championship division.
With their young guns leading the way, the Carmona-based parbusters erased a seven-point overnight deficit and tallied a closing 287 for a one-point victory over a game Cebu Country Club side at Alta Vista here.
Missy Legaspi chose the right time to shine, shooting a two-over-par 74 worth 52 points with Sofia Chabon and Annika Cedo firing 51 each to spearhead the swashbuckling final-day charge that gave SW-Masters a 561 total.
Article continues after this advertisementLora Roberto shot a 46 and playing captain Beachie Abiera and Christine Valdehueza accounted for 46 and 43, respectively, to round out scoring for SW-Masters. Marie Claire Ong failed to count for the second straight day with a 41.
“The strategy at the start of the day was simple and that was for each of us to beat our respective flightmates [from Cebu CC],” Abiera said. “We knew that we were in for a tough fight because they (CCC bets) are very good.
Crystal Superal, Junia Gabasa and first-round hero Lois Kaye Go fired 50s, with Mary Kim Hong, after shooting an opening 52 on Thursday, making a 47 this time and Marie Stephanie Olea firing a 46. Cebu CC counted the 36 of Jyra Mae Wong for its 279.
Article continues after this advertisementDel Monte finished third at 498 after a 249, with host Alta Vista bringing up the rear at 487 after a 259. Alta Vista, though, can take solace from Erika Lim winning the individual title after closing out with 56 points for 108 overall.
Valley Golf and Tagaytay Highlands ruled the Founders and Sportswriters Divisions, respectively. Valley fired 249 points built around the 53 of Isabel Miravite to rip Alabang by 11 with a 492 total. Tagaytay Highlands got 45 points from Sofia Kim Hee Sun and 42 from Bernadette Wong to tally 219 for the day and 431 overall, beating Bacolod Golf Club ( 378).
